Do you want to be able to shop smart and fast, knowing with confidence that the clothes you’re buying will go with items in your closet, look good on your body, and will actually get some wear? It’s all about training your eye. When you’re shopping online or in store, it’s important to have vision to take the clothing item in question from off the rack and create looks with it. I’m here to teach you how to train your eye when you’re shopping for clothes so that you can know within a matter of seconds whether the new piece you’re shopping for (or come across) is worth buying.

How to Train Your Eye When You’re Shopping for Clothes

When something catches your eye, go through this list of questions to know whether or not to add it to your cart.

Ask yourself These questions when you come across a piece you like:

  • What will this go with in my closet?

This requires you to know what items you have in your closet. Go through it in your mind, and see how many pieces can coordinate with the item in question.

  • Will I wear this more than once?

Let’s be real, unless this item is for a major event, it’s important to have some wearability. If you won’t wear it at least 5 times, don’t get it.

  • Will this be flattering on me?

This is when it’s important to know your body shape and what styles look best on your body. It may look good on the model or on the hanger, but how will it look on your body? Envision the piece on you.

  • What colors can I wear with this?

Not just white or black, think outside of the box with different color palettes that will go with the color of the item. This will help you build outfits.

  • How many outfits can I put together with this piece?

    • Know what proportions will work. Whether it’s fitted or oversized, then you’ll need to balance it out with the other pieces in your outfit.

    • Build multiple outfits in your head. If it can go with 4-7 items from your closet in your head, this piece will be a great addition to your closet.

I hope these questions will help train your eye when you’re shopping for clothes, so that you can quickly decide if the clothes you’re shopping for will actually add to your closet, coordinate with multiple pieces, and look good on your body shape. Because shopping smarter and more efficiently is key to saving time, money, and building your closet.
